Council of Spheres
Game System
2nd Edition AD&D (Planescape)
Years Run
August 1994 – September 2001
Synopsis
When the original PlaneScape Campaign setting came out in 1994, I was intrigued by the details that were laid out in the organization of the Planes and their features. The Prime Material Plane was left to the DM to decide which to use. Since I had run campaigns in different worlds such as Greyhawk, Mystara, Krynn and played in Forgotten Realms, I came up with the idea that the ‘Powers’ (aka deities) of the different Prime Material planes had argued over whether to collapse the myriad Prime Materials into a single Plane. Most of the Powers existed either exactly or in analogous concept across different Material Planes (for example the God of Justice was known as Tyr in Forgotten Realms but known as Heironeous in Greyhawk.
So unbeknownst to most of the mortal population, the Powers formed a Council of Spheres (another name for a Material Plane) to decide the fate of their own Sphere of influence. The players would be pawns for these Powers, ;earn their destructive plan and prove that each Sphere deserves to exist due to its own history and contributions to the Multiverse. In concept, the players would literally transport from one world to another and adventure across multiple Prime Materials.
Yeah, it was an over-ambitious concept. Ah, to be a young and crazy DM again.
