Archer’s Day Festival (Pf2e Mini-game)
One of the most anticipated holidays in Avistan, the northern continent of Golarion is the high summer festival called Archer’s Day, honoring the god Erastil, the Hunter.
Despite the holiday’s origins in the worship of Erastil, common country folk from the Lands of the Linnorm Kings to Taldor celebrate the height of summer with a day set aside for establishing new relationships, enjoying current camaraderie, and celebrating the gifts of the gods. Archery competitions are held frequently in which people test their skill with the bow through progressively harder trials. The exact form of competition is different from place to place, and the winner is awarded a rack of elk horns and a quiver of blessed arrows. He or she is also given the title of “Protector”, which they hold until the next year.
While the festival’s traditions emphasize contests of marksmanship, most have expanded to exhibit talents of all types, from baking and storytelling to racing and mock combat. Aside from encouraging a fair-like atmosphere, many of the displays and competitions serve one of two secondary purposes: either as a way for merchants to show off their superior livestock and wares, or (more popularly) as a way for eligible men and women to show off to each other.
While the day’s events at most Archerfeast fairs are filled with games, food, and crafts, the night brings dancing, drinking, pranks, and the crowning of the princes and princesses of spring and summer for the two single youths and two single adults who fared best in the day’s events. The festivities continue late into the evening, but end promptly at midnight, so that in true Erastilian fashion the next day’s responsibilities are not overly impeded. For those not of Erastil’s flock, however, private parties, drinking, and trysting carry on long into the next morning.

Intro for Players:
One of the most popular Archer’s Day festivals is held each year in the pastoral farming village of Amberfell, near the western edge of the Arthfell Forest in Andoran. Known by a reputation for a wide variety of contests that not only includes the typical archery, mock melee and grand melee, there are also baking competitions, farm animal beauty competitions and some very memorable events for eligible single folk to mix, mingle and entangle. People come from 100’s of miles away to be part of the Amberfell Archer’s Day Festival.
Your group has been beating the trail for a few days to get there in time and have arrived just in time! Tomorrow begins three days of fun and festivities, eating, drinking and generally carousing with drunk strangers. It is late afternoon when you begin to smell the fires and meals of the open pits that will feed the Festival-goers tomorrow. A row of tall tents defines the closest edge of town where people who can’t afford local accommodations have set up their own temporary accommodations.

Background
Over the past decade, a cadre of advanced Intellect Devourers (ID) have been infiltrating cults of death and even some more mainstream sects of the population. Their orders have recently changed and now is the time to bring their terror to the unsuspecting population. The GOO (Great Old One) hungers for the dread and horror of these mortals and waits eagerly for the mortals’ fears to feed upon.
The first main horrific encounter takes place in a small village called Amberfell that the party passes through during the Archer’s Day Festival. A local, well-respected priest has been impersonated for the past two years by one of the first IDs to emerge from Orv. It has worked carefully and methodically to gain the love and trust of his simple, but pious faithful. On the holiday known as Archer’s Day, the ID who is masquerading as a priest of Erastil named Father Ganter has a place of honor among the festivals various events. After three joyous days of good natured competition and feasting, a local woodsman named Colton Romer will be named Protector for the year after winning the final archery competition.
What the revelers do not know is that ‘Father Ganter’ will slip a powerful Orvian alchemical reagent called Quickdeath (DC30 + Master Alchemy to Identify) into half of the partygoer’s drinks on the final day and poison them (this poison does not exist in the rules it is a plot convenience). When they party-goers take their last breaths, they will be quickly restored to undeath zombies or ghouls. The newly created monsters will go on a rampage and start to kill the remaining revelers in a horrific slaughter. The ID is careful to allow a good number of the villagers to survive to feed his hungry master. Once the deed is done, he commands the host of ghouls to attack him at which point he will burst from the man’s head and allows the ghouls to keep feasting on his remains.
When the party arrives on the gruesome scene, the town is filled with shrieking, crying and screaming people. The sounds can be heard for nearly a mile away on the breeze. Did I mention that this is a horror-themed campaign?

Part 1: Arrival and Setup

The party arrives on the west road in the afternoon and they can see a couple of the staging areas to the north and south are still under construction including poles, banners, stands, barriers, etc. The town is fairly bustling with the people setting up, people watching the set up and others who are strolling around from their accommodations to local taverns and merchants.
The party can either camp at the outskirts of town for free or they can find accommodations at one of the local inns who have recently raised their prices due to supply and demand:

  • The Grinning Sow (common room 5sp, private 1-2 ppl 1gp, fancy suite 15gp) – Alkeg Onmeimer, H/M/Sloppy ex-farmer who found a buried treasure in his field (16)
  • The Lucky Lady (common room 8sp, private 1-2 ppl 2gp, fancy suite 20gp) – Janna Silverpoint, 1/2E/F/Ex-adventurer/gambler (7)
  • Raster’s Bastard (common room 5sp, private 1-2 ppl 1gp) – Dino Raster, H/M/Smart-ass insulting-in-jest proud of his dubious parentage and claims to be the illegitimate offspring of the wife of former Andoran Supreme Elect Codwin I and a local knave/hustler named Raster. (S of 12)

The party will probably spend a fun evening getting to know some of the locals as well as some strangers from all over. Everyone seems to be in high spirits and many are getting an early start to the next day’s official start of the Archer’s Day Festival. Having a few friendly encounters with the locals will make the upcoming tragedy even more tragic.

Some of the most interesting NPCs include:
– Willie the Wise – Halfling rogue who poses as a 8 year old human child to gain info that he resells. DC30 Per to see through his disguise. He tries to make light if discovered, but is always eager to make a few gold. He can be seen grabbing drinks from passed out revelers. Wears studded leather under plain urchins clothes and has a hidden punching dagger in his boot.
– Albin De Neuve IV – Human aristocrat from Augustana who fancies himself a master archer (he’s slightly better than average, but his sycophants say otherwise). Dresses in only the most fashionable (and usually not very functional) soft calves skin leather. He is always accompanied by his retainers/handlers Gordon (M) and – – Ishek (F). He carries a beautifully carved darkwood longbow and a quiver of 20 (rarely shot) arrows with platinum heads and peacock feather fletching. The bow is worth 50gp and each arrow is worth 6gp.
– Terriana – Half-elf female master crafter from Darkmoon Vale who is actually gathering info for the Lumber Consortium. She is in Amberfell on the pretense of selling her weaponsmith and armorsmith services to the Festival-goers. She has noticed that people look too happy. She is a little paranoid…

These two taverns are very popular during the Festival:
Redfoot’s Rest (6)
Large open taproom with bench seating. Owned by Jo and Kirin Ponab who have lived in the town their whole lives, inheriting the tavern from Jo’s parents. Jo’s father, Bo, had Kellid blood in his line and carried the distinctive reddish skin of his race. What weas once a childish taunt, Bo took pride in his background and adopted the nickname ‘Redfoot’. Jo and Kirin like a loud, rowdy clientele with music, singing and dancing a regular occurrence.
The Burning Field (16)
Although Grander does not have the best selection of drinks in town, the locals appreciate the low key atmosphere of this hangout that caters to the farmers and laborers of Amberfell. During the Festival, Grander uses old ropes and cut up frilly women’s shirts and underwear as banners and throws fresh straw on the floor to absorb the inevitable spilled drinks. Many visitors from poorer areas feel more at ease in here than in the ‘richy’ alehouses.
